Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Arthur M. Blank Hospital

Ardd + Winter provided interior and exterior lighting and lighting controls for the new 1.6 million-square-foot Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital, one of the largest pediatric healthcare facilities in the United States. The scope spanned the hospital tower, emergency department canopy, parking deck, central utility plant, patient care floors, public spaces, staff support areas, and exterior site lighting throughout the campus, encompassing 147 fixture types and more than 800 control zones.

The facility was designed to support patients, families, and more than 4,500 healthcare professionals across a central tower with two patient wings, expanded operating rooms, specialty care units, advanced diagnostic capabilities, and dedicated clinical research space. Ardd + Winter’s lighting solutions served patient rooms, nurse stations, infusion spaces, corridors, lobbies, cafeterias, staff respite areas, and specialty healthcare environments throughout.

Patient room controls required a purpose-built solution. CHOA needed nursing staff managing lighting from wall switches and patients from a pillow switch at the bedside, within a specific sequence of operations the existing control architecture couldn’t deliver. A custom controller was engineered specifically for this project, consolidating both inputs into a single, intuitive system across every patient room. A centralized GUI gave CHOA’s IT team visibility and management capability across the entire facility.

Working closely with electrical contractor Inglett and Stubbs, Ardd + Winter supported fixture selection, controls integration, coordination, and project execution across multiple phases of construction. The project ran from 2019 to 2024, reflecting a thoughtful, long-term approach to healthcare lighting that enhances patient experience, supports caregiver performance, and contributes to operational efficiency campus-wide.
